Crystal Lynn Bowersox (born August 4, 1985) is an American singer-songwriter and actress, who was the runner-up on the ninth season of American Idol. Bowersox's debut album, Farmer's Daughter, was released on December 14, 2010 by Jive Records.

Bowersox released her second album, All That for This, on March 26, 2013.

She gained fame in May 2006 as the runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol.

Her self-titled debut album was released on RCA Records on January 30, 2007, and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 381,000 copies (as of December 2010). Her third album, the holiday-themed Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You, was released on October 12, 2010.

In October 2014, James released "Fall Apart" as the first single from his upcoming second studio album, but Sony opted not to release the record and they split ways.

He was told by his doctor that he would no longer be able to play guitar, a medical prediction that proved untrue.

Before American Idol, he played with his band, The Casey James Band, consisting of James, his brother, Billy Cole (bass), and Jacy Mc Cann (drums).

According to Bowersox, she lived in poverty at this time, and had to resort to begging for insulin at a pharmacy to manage her diabetes after her health insurance expired.

In 2006, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs chose Bowersox to represent Chicago folk musicians in the Sister Cities program "Experience Chicago", held in Birmingham.
